Research Ethics in the Field
Event Information
About this event
London Met PGR Training 2021-22
While all research, including PhD research, requires prior ethical approval, it is not always easy to anticipate at the outset what actual ethical dilemmas one might encounter afterwards in the research field.
Guillemin and Gillam (2004) distinguish between what they call ‘procedural ethics’ (ethics forms and procedures) and ‘ethics in practice’ (the actual ethical dilemmas encountered in the research field). Rather than simply adhering to hard and fast ethical guidelines, such ethical dilemmas may involve addressing tricky, unanticipated situations on a case-by-case basis.
In this workshop, Professor Louise Ryan will use a critically reflexive framework (Ryan, 2015), to consider the ethical dilemmas she encountered in the field and how she sought to address them. The session also discusses how adopting a reflexive approach can help to enhance our practical ethical skills.
Students are encouraged to read this article beforehand:
