About this event

Engaging with audiences can be daunting at the best of times, let alone delivering your story to camera.

Join a panel of research staff from the University of Leeds who took part in the Research Journeys project; a series of workshops that encouraged research staff to think about their discipline differently, engage with non-academic audiences and, ultimately, speak to the camera about their personal journeys and the impact their research is having on the world around us.

Hosted by Storyteller, Tim Ralphs, join us to hear how this opportunity taught the key skills and fostered the confidence for participants to tell their story on screen. Details of panelists:

  • Kathleen McGrath - Project Manager of The Dialect and Heritage Project. Kathleen is a passionate advocate of the celebrating the heritage of everyday lives of the past and of sharing her enjoyment of words. Her research interests include local history, history of Ireland and Gaelic Literature.
  • Professor Melanie Bell - Professor in film history in the School of Media and Communication. About Melanie - My research looks at production histories through a gendered lens and I have published widely on many aspects of women’s work in film production, especially in ‘below-the-line’ roles. I use oral histories, trade union records, photographs and ephemera in my scholarship, and I am especially interested in life narratives and occupational identities.
  • Dr Meenakshi Sarker - Lecturer in human resource management and diversity management. Dr Meenakshi Sarkar is a Lecturer in Human Resource Management & Diversity Management in the work and Employment relations department in the Leeds University Business School. Her areas of expertise are Diversity & Inclusion, Occupational segregation; Ethnic minorities; Migration, mobility and citizenship; Bourdieu; British Pakistani, Taxi drivers, and Intersectionality. An alumni of LUBS Meenakshi moved to the UK for her second masters in HRM in 2012 as a matured student after a successful stint in the corporate world in India. After receiving the Abeceder award and a scholarship, she completed her PhD with LUBS in 2020 and has since been working as a lecturer and PhD supervisor.
