Event description

Description

Venue: The Great Hall, North Wing, St Bartholomew's Hospital.

Clinical research plays an essential role in helping to improve the treatments and services we provide to our patients and to their general welfare. The main aim of our research is to find better ways of looking after our patients and keeping people healthy. We need evidence from trials to know which treatments work best and compare different approaches to preventing and treating illness and health problems.

Our patients and local residents are an essential part of our research partnerships. Barts Health NHS Trust is committed to providing opportunities to all of our patients to become involved in different stages of our research whether in the design and development of studies, as participants in clinical trials or getting involved in the dissemination and diffusion of research outcomes. The experience and insight patients and the public bring to our research is invaluable and helps us to continue to develop innovative and more effective treatments and therapies.

Research Matters: Get Involved, Make a Difference! brings together patients, families, carers and staff to showcase some of the very best examples of how Barts Health NHS Trust and QMUL’s School of Medicine and Dentistry works together with patients and the public in the design, development, delivery and dissemination of our research.

This event will comprise of a series of short talks from researchers and lay advisory group members, group discussions and interactive exercises, highlighting the many ways the patients and local residents are making a difference to our research activities. Speakers include members of the Diabetes Research Lay Panel and Trials Connect, whilst members of our recently formed Barts Young People’s Research Advisory Group (BYPRAG) will be setting the scene by performing a short play they have written themselves about their experiences of taking part in clinical trials.

There will follow an informal reception where attendees will have a chance to meet researchers from different medical specialties and find out more about local research and how they might get involved. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about, and sign up to be a Barts Health ‘Patient Research Champion’.

The programme will commence promptly at 6pm.

NB: the venue has a side entrance for wheelchair users. If you require wheelchair access, please indicate this on the registration form and we will contact you in advance to make the necessary arrangements.
