The study of Twitter as a forum for public debate has focused on quantitative approaches which have established the value of Twitter as a medium for the communication of ideas and partisanship. This paper focuses on qualitative methods for understanding how Twitter is used in political campaigning. Through a discussion of how Nvivo can be used to capture and analyse social media, in combination with other forms of textual analysis, this paper explores how Twitter has been used in recent public controversies.
