Counselling, Psychotherapy, and Trauma Studies Seminar Series 2017/18

Presented by Dr Sue Price, Assistant Professor in Counselling, University of Nottingham

The relationship between therapist and client is one of the most researched subjects in the field of counselling and psychotherapy. Moreover, this relationship is probably the most important aspect in counselling and psychotherapy with regard to client improvement and outcome. There are many different views of what this relationship is. One of the most common concepts is that of the ‘working alliance’ which is rooted in psychodynamic theory and essentially consists of goals, tasks and bonds. Many inventories, questionnaires and measures have been created in order to measure such a relationship. One exists which is designed to assess the working alliance. There is also the Barratt-Lennard Relationship Inventory (BLRI ) which is designed to assess the therapeutic relationship consisting of congruence, empathy and UPR in accordance with the humanistic and Person-centred approach. My addition to the research literature is that of the Relational Depth Inventory which is designed to assess the more profound and deeper connections between client and therapist. I will look at my research so far and plans for future research.
