Description

A public research seminar - Global Perspectives on Work Based learning by Dr Jon Talbot, Centre for Work Related Studies (CWRS), University of Chester.

The format:

  • Refreshments and networking (20 minutes)
  • Research seminar (20 minutes)
  • Questions and answers (20 minutes)

During the past twenty years there has been a global shift towards vocationalism in education. This is evidenced by the rise of new forms of learning, variously described as ‘Work based learning’ (WBL), ‘Work Integrated Learning’, ‘Work Related Learning’ and ‘Work Applied Learning’. For the purposes of the presentation the term ‘Work based learning’ is used although it covers a variety of practices, which can be summarised as follows:

  • WBL for those currently outside the labour market. This includes full time students studying prior to entry into the labour market and usually older people excluded from the labour market, perhaps after being made redundant.
  • A second type of WBL is aimed at those already in work. Here the purpose is enable learners to gain formal qualifications for their non-formal and informal learning and/or update their professional skills and knowledge.
  • A third type of WBL is where the learner is partly in the workplace and partly in a formal educational setting.

The presentation will briefly review potential reasons for the rise of WBL and present practices in selected countries.

Jon Talbot is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Work Related Studies. He is currently in the process of editing a book entitled ‘Global perspectives on Work based learning’ which forms the basis for the presentation and has plans.
