About the Symposium

This half-day Research Supervision Symposium is open to all staff currently engaged in postgraduate research supervision at the University of Bristol, and to those who would like to supervise in the future. It will be hosted online via Blackboard Collaborate. The symposium will be led and supported by colleagues from the Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching (BILT), the Bristol Doctoral College (BDC), the Academic Quality and Policy Office (AQPO), the Students Union, and School/Faculty PGR Directors. Each session will be recorded and made available for colleagues to view online after the event.

Please note, all registrations will be enrolled onto the Blackboard Organisation 'Research Supervisor Development' as this is where the live sessions for the Symposium will take place. Once enrolled you will receive a Welcome email with further information about accessing the Symposium.

The aims of the symposium are to:

• Bring together Research Supervisors to develop a community of practice

• Reflect on PGR supervision feedback and plan next steps

• Share and engage with current and most appropriate approaches to PGR supervision

Program

9.30 - 10.30: Welcome and Panel Discussion: “Postgraduate Research Supervision at Bristol” (Associate PVC for PGR, Professor Robert Bickers, and SU PG Education Officer, Leah Martindale)

10.30 – 11.30: Parallel panel sessions

A. Best Practice in Research Supervision - led by Dr Hannah Grist (University of Bristol) and Ros O'Leary (University of Bristol)

B. Best practice in cross cultural supervision - led by Professor Gina Wisker (University of Brighton)

C. PGR wellbeing - led by Professor Ros Jenning (University of Gloucestershire)

11.45-12.45: Faculty Discussion Sessions (led by School/Faculty PGR Directors)

12.45 – 13.00: Closing Remarks and Next Steps (Prof Robert Bickers)
