Event description

Description

Game-based learning allows for a more casual and potentially more engaging experience for users of research support services. Many games have been developed to enable these services to engage in different ways with their researchers, but it can sometimes be difficult to understand how a game works or how it might facilitate discussion and learning, unless you get the chance to play it or see it being played.

The purpose of this event is to give research support staff the opportunity to experience and discuss several games. The games selected for the event cover a variety of topics, such as open access, research data management, copyright and impact. Attendees will come away from the event with a better understanding of how these games work in practice, and how they might be used to complement and enhance existing research support services.

Places at this event are limited. Refreshments and a light lunch will be included, with vegetarian options available.

Games planned/confirmed for this event:

  • Digital Preservation Game (University of Glasgow) - Planned. Description not yet available.

  • The Game of Open Access (University of Huddersfield) - Confirmed. Participants work their way through a metaphorical journal article submission, discussing various aspects of the publication process and Open Access while also competing to answer as many question cards as possible.

  • The Impact Game (Cranfield University) - Confirmed. Inspired by “Snakes and Ladders”, participants compete to be the first to reach the end of the game board, answering questions and discussing things like research data management, research impact and open access along the way.

  • LEGO: Metadata for Reproducibility (University of Glasgow) - Confirmed. Participants work together in teams to document how they made a LEGO model, then swap instructions and try to replicate the other teams’ models, facilitating discussion on metadata for reproducibility and how this can be captured.

  • Open Access Escape Room (University of Essex) - Confirmed. An “Escape Room” themed around Open Access, featuring a number of puzzles to help participants better understand the main ideas and issues involved in OA.

  • The Publishing Trap (UK Copyright Literacy) - Confirmed. Participants take on the roles of four imaginary academics from different disciplines as they make various decisions around their research careers, generating discussion about copyright, open access, licensing and impact.

  • Virtual Games Workshop (University of Edinburgh) - Confirmed. Description not yet available.

We know that there are lots more games and game-related sessions out there, so if this event proves to be popular then we might look into running more in future with different games!
