Researching disability, gender and violence with young people in Uganda: bringing methods and voices into dialogue

This first CEID seminar of the term will discuss a three-year ESRC-funded research project called Navigating the Challenges of Violence, Gender and Disability (NAVIGENDI), a collaborative project led by CEID with a team of researchers and activists from the UK and Uganda. The project involves a longitudinal mixed-method research design with new qualitative and existing quantitative data collected from young people with disabilities in Uganda. It aims to understand how intersecting inequalities around disability and gender shape their experiences of violence, how they manage and navigate such violence, and what forms of support they draw on. A central concern for the project is its ‘dialogical’ research approach. This involves consistently bringing together the different kinds of data to understand their connections and disconnections and engaging as a research team in structured processes of dialogue, drawing on our different positionalities, experiences and epistemologies to understand what we are finding.

In this seminar members of the research team from the UK and Uganda will present some initial insights from the first phase of the project. They will discuss issues emerging that are beginning to shape important lines of enquiry that the project will pursue. The researchers will also reflect on the research approach thus far and consider its value in answering the research questions.
