Description

You are warmly invited to join us for a CSPACE Research Event that will take place on 15 May.

From 13:00 - 14:00 at Ravensbury 114.

Presenter 1: Elaine Matchett: I joined BCU in 2010 and became Programme Leader for Education Studies in 2017. This year I am fortunate enough to be working full time on my PhD.

Education for children in the care system: The DfE (2018) stated that the attainment of children in care had increased: in 2017, 17.5% of young people in care achieved good passes at GCSE in Maths and English – an improvement from the 16% seen in 2016. However, if these figures represent an improvement in attainment, they still compare poorly to the general population. In the same year, 2017, 58.9% of pupils (not in care) achieved good passes in Maths and English.

My research aims to understand what education is like for those young people in the care system, why academic outcomes remain low and what young people feel might support them more effectively. To this end, I have interviewed 25 recent care leavers in Birmingham and have their consent to share their experiences, opinions and recommendations.

I have used Archer’s ideas around reflexivity to consider how young people in care manage the structures of school education, relationships with key adults and their peers and the perceived expectations of their abilities and aspirations.

Presenter 2: Hashem Mohammed Getaweh, HELS PhD student; Racial Disproportionality and Disparities in the Child Welfare System: A Study Exploring the Subjective Experiences of Black Adult Males Who Were Formally Looked After in Birmingham.

Hashem will be presenting his qualitative research project exploring the experiences and identities of young black men who have been in the care system in Birmingham.
