Description

Researching Society: New Horizons
Department of Sociological Studies Annual Postgraduate Conference 2018

We would like to invite you to the annual PGR conference at the Department of Sociological Studies, at The University of Sheffield.

This year’s conference theme is “Researching Society; New Horizons”. Contemporary society offers new opportunities and challenges for social scientists. From accelerated processes of globalisation, to the proliferation of the digital, to the vote for Brexit and Trump, society is in continuous flux. Nevertheless, many aspects of our lives remain constant with social scientists utilising innovative methods to gain new insights in these areas. It is by undertaking research in the contemporary world that we can help create new research horizons.

This one-day conference invites all researchers with an interest in the workings of twenty-first century society. There will be a range of talks from postgraduate students. Talks will be arranged into seven streams across the day, including;

  • Changing Family Relationships and Structures
  • Digital Society
  • Health and Illness
  • Rising Social Inequalities
  • Globalisation and Migration
  • Innovative Research Methods and Approaches
  • Caring and Care Practices

We are delighted to announce that Professorial Research Fellow and public health specialist Sarah Salway, whose work lies at the intersection of sociology, social policy and public health, will be our keynote speaker. There will also be a roundtable discussion with PhD students from the department which will focus on ‘doing sensitive research’. The conference is free to attend. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Places are limited.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The Department of Sociological Studies is approximately a 33 minute walk from The Midland Station (Sheffield train station), or 10 minute drive. There is a small number of parking spaces available on site and on the roads surrounding the building, however we cannot guarantee availability of spaces on the day.

The nearest large car park is Qpark located on Durham Road, opposite the Children's Hospital, which is a 10 minute walk from the Department of Sociological Studies.

It is also possible to get a bus from The Midland Station (Sheffield train station) to near the department. From Sheaf Street it is about a 2 minute walk to Howard Hotel to get the Milhouses Number 6 bus. It is then 7 stops, approx. 11 minutes to Clarkson Street, and then a 9 minute walk to the Elmfield Building.
