Description

One Day Workshop in Finding Resilience

Kevin Simpson is a clinical psychologist, chief executive and co-founder with Outlook South West. Every year, this organisation provides NHS treatment across Cornwall for 11,000 adults who are experiencing stress, anxiety and depression.

Kevin is interested in how we help people deal with the demands of our modern lifestyle to help build healthier, richer and more meaningful lives. Integrating practice from clinical psychology, neuroscience, mindfulness and the latest wellbeing research, he teaches practical and ‘real-life’ strategies that people can follow to live a more stress-resilient lifestyle.

    • What is Stress?

    • This introductory session looks at stress and ‘pressure’ in the home and at work. Long-term stress creates higher inflammation and increased levels of cortisol in our body – all of which can create contribute significant risks to our mental and physical well-being. We explore a broad range of practical strategies to help keep stress at bay and also to consider those activities that re-charge our energy levels and boost resilience

    • Time Management

    • In this section we explore the key importance of prioritising, planning and organising one’s time to boost productivity and reduce stress. Participants will also learn about approaches to tackle procrastination.

    • Mindfulness

    • A brief introduction to the principles and practice of mindfulness.

    • Finding your Balance

    • This part draws on exciting ideas from a new approach in psychology called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ‘ACT’ for short). There will be exercises to help participants identify their key life values and to explore how we can better live our lives aligned with these values. People who are more engaged and balanced in their life are more resilient to stress.

    • Sleep

    • Sleep deprivation is now being recognised as a major health problem with many studies indicating that a third of the population are having insufficient sleep. This part of the course discusses the issues around insomnia and offers some evidenced-based solutions to getting a better night’s sleep.

    • Positivity and Resilience

    • Developing positivity and an optimistic mindset can offer a powerful advantage in coping with change and everyday pressures. Much recent research suggests that people with high levels of optimism stay healthier and live longer lives. Pessimists have a harder time. We explore some grounded and practical skills to develop realistic optimism!

    • Keeping your Cool & Asserting with Confidence

    • This popular section gives people a powerful structured approach to handling difficult workplace conversations and learning some step-wise communication strategies to be positively assertive in any situation. Finally, we recap on the course content and allow time for people to draw up a personal action plan to manage stress and pressure in the workplace.
