Resolving Maritime and Logistics Disputes through Arbitration and Mediation

The maritime and logistics sectors are the arteries of global trade yet they are also complex, multi-jurisdictional, and highly exposed to contractual, operational, and geopolitical risks. As supply chains become more globalised, digitalised, and regulated, disputes are increasing in volume and complexity.

This webinar explores how arbitration and mediation are being used (and re-imagined) to resolve disputes in these sectors, from port operations and charterparty disagreements to multimodal logistics, cargo claims, and infrastructure projects. It will highlight emerging practices, institutions, and technologies shaping maritime and logistics ADR globally and within Africa.

About the speaker:

Foluke Akinmoladun is the Managing Solicitor of Trizon Law Chambers, Nigeria, a legal practitioner, accountant, mediator, arbitrator, and chartered secretary with expertise in commercial, maritime, construction, and corporate governance law. A Fellow of several leading ADR institutes, she has held key leadership positions including former Director General of the African Shipowners Association (Nigeria), current Chairperson of the Nigeria Branch of the African Bar Association, and Co-Lead of National Action Group on Nigeria’s implementation of AfCFTA (Transportation Workstream). She is a member of WISTA International’s Diversity Committee and WISTA Nigeria, and represents Nigeria on the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR in Paris. She also serves on ICC Nigeria’s Arbitration Committee, is a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) and a member of the Maritime Arbitrators Association of Nigeria (MAAN).

Foluke serves on multiple panels of neutrals, including the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NICArb), the Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse (LMDC), the Lagos Chamber of Commerce International Arbitration Centre (LACIAC), the Asaba Chamber of Commerce International Arbitration Commission (ASCCIAC), the Kaduna Multi-Door Courthouse, and the Property Dispute Management Centre. A GAR “45 Under 45” finalist for Nigeria, UN MIPAD Honouree, and recipient of the Top 30 Most Influential Female Law Firm Founders in Africa (2020) award, she is widely recognised for her leadership in maritime law and dispute resolution across Africa and beyond.

About the moderator:

Mark Wasunna is a lawyer who trained in the United Kingdom. He completed both LLB Law and Criminology (2016) and LLM Corporate and Commercial Law (2017) at the University of Sheffield.

Mark subsequently returned to Kenya to undertake a Postgraduate Diploma at the Kenya School of Law, which he successfully completed and is awaiting to be admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. During his training at the Kenya School of Law, he also worked with John Mburu and Company Advocates in Nairobi where he had invaluable first-hand experience working on a wide range of legal and arbitral matters. As a law student, Mark worked as an intern at Bowmans (Coulson Harney LLP) in Nairobi.He is currently a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Mark has a keen interest in alternative dispute resolution, international arbitration and the role the courts play in arbitral matters, especially in developing nations. He is also interested in the governance and economic development in Africa through the application of the law.
