Description

This event, in Perth, Scotland, is open to Prospect branches who have been invited to send one representative in person to the meeting.

Some branches are also hosting a local VC link to allow other Prospect members to join into the meeting. If your branch is setting up a VC link, or is there is one that you can get to easily, you are welcome to join it. VC hub sites are listed below, please contact Sarah Hughes (sarah.hughes@prospect.org.uk) if you need more information. We are sorry that its not possible to host a VC link from every branch.

  • Aberdeen (James Hutton Institute)
  • Dundee (James Hutton Institute)
  • Edinburgh (Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh - numbers limited)
  • Edinburgh (BIOSS - Kings Buildings)
  • Dounreay (only for members with access to Dounreay site)

At the meeting we will discuss the direction Prospect needs to take to be able to step up its campaigning on climate change at both national and branch level. Prospect want to take concrete and meaningful action internally (for example our own carbon footprint) and externally (our lobbying campaigning and industrial work).

Background

As a union we have always been led by evidence, and the evidence clearly shows that the world is facing a climate emergency that requires significant and urgent action. Prospect is the leading trade union for science, engineering and the environmental workforce, this is an important issue for us – both due to the work our members do, and because the science demands more ambition to deliver on the UK’s carbon obligations.

We are proud to count climate scientists and environmental professionals among Prospect’s membership alongside workers in the energy and transport sectors, and we believe this holistic perspective gives our union a unique insight into the challenges we face as a country and how they might be overcome. Over recent months the school ‘climate strike’ and the activism of Extinction Rebellion and other groups have generated welcome attention on this issue.

The Wesminster Government has made a commitment to Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 and the Scottish Government has set a target date of 2045. We believe that there is an active role for government to play in this task alongside business, unions and environmental organisations.

Prospect is already leading the way, for example, with our work on renewable energy and the Just Transition Comission in Scotland. We already plan to renew our training for environmental reps and further our promotional material and guidance on climate change/environmental topics.

A number of branches have been asking Prospect to provide more leadership on climate change issues, for example, to declare a climate emergency, to take part in the global climate strike and to take positive action to limit our own environmental impact. We need to carefully consider how we respond to these requests and what the policy implications are. We are therefore inviting members to meet with us to discuss what steps we can take.
