Regardless of Brexit discussions and deals, if you recognise the importance of research impact and understand that research can help create the kind of world we want for generations to come, you need know about an EU approach to bridge the gap between research and wider society. The approach is called Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).

During this workshop we will:

Unpack what RRI is
Learn how to utilise RRI within your research
Begin understanding how RRI can be a game changer when discussing the wider impact of your research to other researchers, policy makers, educators, industry innovators and civil society organisations

If you believe in bringing your research into the open, anticipating the consequences of your research outcomes and involving society more widely, this workshop will provide you with a framework to get started.

RRI is an approach that enables researchers to think more widely about the impact of their research. The RRI is explicitly designed to encourage researchers to involve society in science and innovation from the start of the research process in order to align outcomes with the values of society.

RRI is often compared to a wide umbrella connecting different aspects of the relationship between research and society including: public engagement, open access, gender equality, science education, ethics, and governance.

RRI is a cross-cutting approach linked to Horizon 2020, the EU Programme for Research and Innovation 2014-2020.

Presenter: Dr Katy R Mahoney is an independent professional development coach, trainer and consultant. She specialises in project coaching, supporting researchers who want to improve their productivity, self-confidence and communication skills in order deliver successful research projects on time and in budget. Katy recognises that completing any research involves significant challenges and also great rewards. She ensures that the researchers she works with leave her training sessions fully equipped to recognise learning opportunities, gain confidence, and increase their productivity to achieve success. Katy completed a PhD in organic farming in 2006, has worked in professional development roles delivering training and coaching at universities across the UK and Europe and is a qualified researcher performance and development coach.
