Event description

Description

The restraint of volume change in reinforced concrete elements can lead to cracking, even in the absence of external loading. The form of external restraint can affect the behaviour of the member.

Current guidance is based on end restraint and, until now, research on edge restraint has been limited. This presentation details the results of an investigation into the restraint of imposed strains in edge restrained members.

Full scale testing of a reinforced concrete wall and steel member has illustrated the influence of vertical steel reinforcement on the mechanism of restraint development. The experimental findings revealed that the presence of reinforcement increased restraint by between 40 and 65%, with this further improving over time. A parametric study to analyse the influence of wall aspect ratios, restraint and boundary conditions will also be presented.

To conclude, John will make a comparison between designs based on current guidance and those using the findings of his research.

Professor John Forth lectures at the School of Civil Engineering, University of Leeds. He is the Chair in Concrete Engineering and Structures and also Director of the Neville Centre of Excellence in Cement and Concrete Engineering.

He is currently leading research into the serviceability and durability of reinforced concrete and masonry structures, supervising PhD students in this field. John has attracted funding from Government and Private funding sources of just under £5 million for research projects involving long-term full-scale monitoring of concrete structures. He has links with industry and was a Director of a company that produced sustainable construction units. Professor Forth is a UK representative on the EC2 Revision Committee as well as a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers Research Committee.
