Rethinking Capitalism - with Mariana Mazzucato and Michael Jacobs
Wed 12 October 2016, 17:00 – 19:00 BST
Western capitalism is in crisis. For decades investment has been falling, living standards have stagnated or declined, and inequality has risen dramatically. Economic policy has neither reformed the financial system nor restored stable growth. Climate change meanwhile poses increasing risks to future prosperity. Today's deep economic problems reflect the inadequacies of orthodox economic theory and the failure of policies informed by it. But what are the alternatives?
ABOUT THE EVENT
Join Professor Mariana Mazzucato and Michael Jacobs in a discussion about whether there are other economic approaches which can better explain how capitalism works, why it often doesn't and how it can be made more innovative, inclusive and sustainable.
The event marks the launch of their new book, Rethinking Capitalism: Economics and Policy for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth, and is co-hosted by the Schools of Business, Management and Economics (BMEc) and Global Studies, and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). Speakers include Mariana Mazzucato, Michael Jacobs, Steve McGuire (Head of School, BMEc), Andrea Cornwall (Head of School, Global Studies) and Melissa Leach (Director, IDS), Carlota Perez and Stephany Griffith-Jones, followed by a Q&A.
It will be held at the University of Sussex (Falmer) in the Jubilee large lecture theatre. See campus map here.
