About this event

Please join us for a two-day online workshop exploring the patterns of continuity and change in economic ideas, practices and in policy responses to crises in the UK & abroad.

Over two days (November 25 and 26) leading academics will discuss UK and global responses to some of the fundamental challenges posed by Brexit, the global financial crisis, climate change, austerity and Covid-19 pandemic policies. Across six themed panels, presenting scholars will discuss their most recent work.

  • Panel 1: Pandemic politics and policy (Thursday November 25, 13:00-14:30)
  • Panel 2: Lessons in economic change (Thursday November 25, 15:00-16:30).
  • Panel 3: Tax and inequality (Friday November 26, 9:00-10:30).
  • Panel 4: Challenging Neoliberalism? (Friday November 26, 11:00-12:30).
  • Panel 5: Politics of Economic Knowledge (Friday November 26, 13:30-15:00).
  • Panel 6: Monetary Policy & Central Banks (Friday November 26,15:00-17:00)

The full programme and speaker line-up is available here.

Exploring the past, present, and future of economic policy, the sessions will address questions of critical importance to political economy such as:

  • To what extent have established economic ideas and narratives been challenged and revised?
  • How have economic policy makers responded to successive crises and emergent issues?
  • Has the economics profession kept pace with these developments?
  • What are the long-term implications of the Covid-19 pandemic for the economy?
  • Has ‘neoliberalism’ been strengthened or undermined – and is it still a useful conceptual tool?

The event is co-sponsored by the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) and the Political Studies Association (PSA) British & Comparative Political Economy Group.

After you have registered we will send you the links to join the online workshop.
