Background:

Rethinking Education: Towards a global common good? (UNESCO, 2015) was published at a particular historical juncture when the international education and development community moved towards the global framework of Sustainable Development Goals.

The presentation will briefly recount the publication’s main postulates and will expand on its conclusions, raising some fundamental questions regarding inequalities in education and the challenges entailed in achieving the intention of leaving no one behind.

Speaker biography:

Carlos Vargas is Senior Project Officer in the Section for Partnerships Cooperation and Research at UNESCO’s Division for Education 2030 Support and Coordination. Before joining UNESCO, Carlos worked for civil society and regional organisations, local governments and universities in Mexico, Latin America and Spain, combining the roles of researcher and practitioner of adult learning and education. At the University of Deusto (Bilbao), Carlos worked as International Research Project Officer and lectured on the European Master’s in Lifelong Learning: Policy and Management. Under this programme he was visiting scholar to the Institute of Education (IOE-University College London), Aarhus University (Denmark), and Melbourne Graduate School of Education (Australia). His research and publications focus on the relationship between education, human rights and wellbeing, and the orientations and discourses of public policy and their effects on society. He holds a PhD in Education from the University of Deusto (Basque Country).
