Description

To mark the release of our fourth magazine on race and empire Consented brings you Rethinking Empire, a day of discussions around race, capitalism and decoloniality.

Empire is too often deemed to have been left in the past rather than having continued to this day, shaping all of our lives through racial hierarchies that place whiteness at the top, whilst race is always presented as separate from other power structures. Too often we hear discussions of class and capitalism that do not centre race but what would capitalism be without a racialized labour force and divide and rule? What if both systems, race and capitalism, rely on each other in order to exist?

More generally, discussions on decolonising or decoloniality are becoming more common but what do both these terms mean? Is decoloniality even possible against the backdrop of a highly colonial global order? And if it is, what would decoloniality look like?

The day will be split into two panels separated by a 30 minute break:

1) Race, capitalism and empire

2) Is decoloniality possible?

Speakers include: Dr Gurminder Bhambra (Sussex University), Remi Graves (Poet and Writer) and Kerem Nisancioglu (SOAS). More speakers to be announced shortly.

This event is being held at Birkbeck’s Malet Street campus on the 8th October. Doors open at 12.45pm for a 1pm start. Each ticket comes with a copy of our new magazine on Race & Empire (which sells for £7.50).
