About this event

Tracing the 1939 voyage of narrow boat Cressy, the trip that inspired the book that inspired the restoration of our waterways

Venue:

This course will take place on during a short walk at the inland port of Shardlow. Details will be sent after booking.

This course is for:

Anyone with an interest in how our industrial heritage came to be preserved.

The course will cover:

How Tom and Angela Rolt set out in 1939 on a tour of the canals as their honeymoon.

The role of the Trent and Mersey Canal as part of the ‘backbone’ of the inland waterways network in the eighteenth century

How the book of their trip ‘Narrow Boat’ came to inspire the movement to preserve and restore our waterway network.

This course will take place on during a short walk at the inland port of Shardlow. Please come prepared for the weather and with suitable footwear.

There are no exams or formal assessments.

There will be chance to ask questions and contribute to discussions

Your tutor will give you feedback during the course and you will be able to self-assess.

Work outside of sessions:

You will have access to a short extract from the book Narrow Boat in advance – you may wish to read this in preparation.

Additional costs and what to prepare:

This course is offered free of charge.

Please come prepared for the weather and with suitable footwear for walking a short distance outside.
