Retrieval Practice: Theory, Tips and Techniques

By Evidence Based Education
Online event

Overview

This practical webinar, hosted by Kate Jones, explores how retrieval practice can be designed and used effectively

to support long-term learning inside and outside of the classroom.

Drawing on evidence-informed principles, participants will examine how retrieval practice fits within curriculum planning, from identifying target knowledge to embedding retrieval across short and long-term sequences.

The webinar showcases a wide range of low-effort, high-impact strategies; including multiple choice questions, fill-in-the-blanks, free recall, silent debates, flashcards, and collaborative approaches, with careful attention to keeping practice low-stakes, inclusive, and workload-friendly.

Teachers will also consider how technology and Generative AI can be used responsibly to support question design, address misconceptions, and enhance retrieval both in and beyond the classroom.

Attendees will leave with concrete, adaptable ideas they can implement immediately to strengthen memory, understanding, and confidence in their learners.
