Event description

Description

Revealing the Walbrook - one of London's Lost Rivers - in the company of author Tom Bolton. Tom wrote "The Lost Rivers of London: A Walker's Guide" (Strange Attrector Press) some six years ago and we at the Museum of Walking celebrated its publication with a series of Walk After Work Walks on Wednesdays in 2011. Tom's agreed to undertake another exploration of the Walbrook's course, and although the river might still be flowing beneath our feet, there has been plenty of changes along its banks with new buildings, some honouring the river, others blatantly ignoring it.

The Walbrook is one of London’s lost rivers, buried beneath the streets of the City that it spawned. At the end of our walk, where the Walbrook meets the Thames is where the first Roman's settled and the river's route marks the eastern boundary of the Roman city of Londonium.

On this walk you will uncover layers of social history and cultural curiosity, and find out about the controversies that still linger along its route. Join Tom Bolton, author of London’s Lost Rivers: A Walker’s Guide and Andrew Stuck from the Museum of Walking to Reveal the Walbrook and bring it to life.

We will be handing out a field notebook and pencils and other resources, and we will also be asking you to help us reveal the route of the Walbrook - we want you to be as creative as possible! Come dressed in blue so we emulate the river as we flow through the City.

Our start will be from Shoreditch High Street Overground station and the finish will be on the Thames foreshore, just beyond Cannon Street railway station.

Tom will be signing copies of his books. A special discount for the books will be made available to those on the walk.
