Event description
Led by Dr Ursula Hurley (Creative Writing) & Prof Philip James (Ecology), see Peel Park in a different light on this Eco-Poetic Ramble.

About this Event

Starting from the front entrance of Peel Building at 2pm

As a part of Research in the Park, this guided walk around Peel Park, the Meadows, and the David-Lewis Playing field will engage sensory and emotional experiences of place to explore how we feel about “urban wildness”. In particular, we will investigate how we understand and inhabit the “edgelands” where the natural and urban environments interact. As we walk we will pay close attention to the different species sharing our space, and we will pause at various points to generate collective poems about our feelings as we inhabit different states of wildness. No prior poetic experience is necessary – all that’s needed are your responses to simple questions about what you like or dislike. As well as being a fun and creative activity, we will co-construct a piece of practice-based research, which uses poetic knowledge to capture complex responses to environmental experiences.

Urban Wildness is a concept approached in often distinct ways by practitioners of different disciplines. Combining these approaches generate novel insights. We bring together the work of Ursula Hurley and Philip James, a creative writer and an ecologist, to showcase how this particular interface generates new ways of thinking within both disciplines and how they may be applied in a research programme on urban re-wilding.

Practicalities: the walk will last approximately 90 minutes. Please dress for the Salford weather, and be prepared to encounter long grass!
