RGS GISRUK GIScience Webinar September 2025 - Prof. Nico Van de Weghe

Welcome to the RGS GISRUK GIScience Webinar with Prof. Nico Van de Weghe! Join us online on 17th September 2025 for our seminar. Prof. Van de Weghe will present a seminar on Shaping the future of GeoAI with hybrid intelligence and foundation models. GeoAI, the integration of artificial intelligence and geographic information science, is rapidly becoming a key enabler of spatial decision-making across many domains. This keynote explores the foundations and emerging directions of GeoAI, focusing on how it uses spatial and temporal structures in data to improve reasoning, prediction, and interpretation. We will give particular attention to hybrid approaches that combine data-driven learning with geographic knowledge and rules. We will also pay specific attention to foundation models such as large language models and world models, both highly relevant in our context, and explore how they fit within the GeoAI landscape for integrating diverse sources of geospatial knowledge. To ground the discussion, we will present examples from ongoing research in traffic management and mobility, showing how GeoAI supports applications such as real-time monitoring, predictive modeling, and adaptive routing.

The seminar will take place on ZOOM - Registered participants will be provided with the Zoom link, via email, 24 hours before the start of the seminar.
