We are delighted to invite you to this year’s RGS-IBG Food Geography Research Group away day. To spark ideas and collaborations in advance of the RGS annual conference theme of “creativity” we are holding a 1.5 day participatory workshop to explore how creativity is being used across food geographies, including group discussions, method sharing, and chances for networking.

The event is open to members and non-members of the RGS, and people of all career stages. Please see the open call for session contributors below.

Date: Thursday 19 – Friday 20 June 2025

Place: Bristol, UK

The event will involve:

An optional evening activity to get to know each other
A day of workshops and sharing how we use creativity in our research
Production of a zine

The event is almost completely subsidised by the RGS-IBG but we will ask for a small fee (£6) to cover the remaining costs and commit attendance. Unfortunately, we cannot fund travel or accommodation.

Event details

For the evening activity on Thursday 19th June we are lucky enough to be working with Redcatch Community Garden (https://www.redcatchcommunitygarden.com/). We will visit the garden to:

have a tour and talk from the head gardener,
pick the salad leaves for lunch on the 20th, and
experience a Mental Health and Wellbeing art workshop taster

The activity will last from 6-8pm with drinks and cake bites provided. Please arrive from 5.30pm. Afterwards, there will be the option to go for dinner in the centre of town (self-funded).

For the workshops on Friday 20th, we will be based at the University of Bristol, Howard House, Room 1.01, from 9.30am until 4pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Open Call

As part of this event, we are looking for people who are willing to share how they've used creativity in their research. Our suggested format is each person has a table with creative outputs or an interactive activity and shares what they've done/their method. Participants will rotate around the tables in 10 minutes slots, choosing a different one each time.

Other practicalities

The address for Redcatch Community Centre is Bristol Broadwalk Redcatch Park, Knowle, Bristol BS4 2RD. It is accessible by the 2 and 73 buses from Bristol Temple Meads or the centre of town.

The address for Howard House is Queen's Ave, Bristol BS8 1SD. It is accessible by the number 8 bus from Bristol Temple Meads, and the 1, 2, 5 and 8 buses from the centre of town.

If you are attending the evening event, we recommend finding accommodation in the centre, as that is in the middle of both Redcatch and Howard House.
