Event description

Description

Francesca Maffeo Gallery is pleased to announce Rhiannon Adam as a new gallery artist. To mark the occasion we are pleased to welcome her to the gallery for a book launch and polaroid workshop.

Rhiannon Adam, author of 'Polaroid: The Missing Manual' (Thames and Hudson, 2017) will lead an afternoon of Polaroid manipulation to coincide with a book launch event at Francesca Maffeo Gallery.

The workshop will take all participants through the basics of Polaroid cameras and films, from vintage cameras of the 60s and 70s through to the most modern analogue/digital hybrids, before moving on to demonstrate some of the myriad possibilities of creative manipulation.

Attendees will have the opportunity to dismantle the Polaroid film sheet to create a one-off piece of art and will leave with the knowledge and confidence to take their experiments further. Equally suitable for the novice or experienced Polaroid aficionado.

All materials will be provided and participants will not need to bring along anything other than themselves!

Ticket holders will also be able to purchase signed copies of 'Polaroid: The Missing Manual' at a discounted price of £14.95 (RRP £19.95)

Rhiannon Adam was born in Co. Cork, Ireland and currently lives and works in London. She was educated at Central Saint Martins college of Art and Design (London), and at the University of Cambridge.

Adam's work is heavily influenced by her nomadic childhood spent at sea, sailing around the world with her parents. Little photographic evidence of this period in her life exists, igniting an interest in the influence of photography on recall, the notion of the photograph as a physical object, and the image as an intersection between fact and fiction – themes that continue throughout Adam’s work.

Her long-form projects straddle the boundary between art photography and social documentary, while subject matter is often focused on narratives relating to myth, loneliness, and the passage of time, particularly in relation to isolated communities. The results of these explorations are captured almost exclusively in ambient light through the hazy abstraction of degrading instant-film materials and colour negative film.

As well as her own work, she also publishes photography books under the name Lost Cat. The first title, Kevin Griffin's Omey Island: Last Man Standingwas released in 2013. Rhiannon also curates exhibitions, and collaborates with artists wishing to develop their projects for exhibition.

In 2015, she spent 3 months on Pitcairn Island, creating a documentary photography project and Radio 4 programme. Francesca Maffeo Gallery looks forward to exhibiting this work in April 2018.

Rhiannon’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including in the New York Times, BBC, Le Monde and Colors Magazine.
