Event description

Description

The third instalment of the RIBA Book Club introduces Mark Swenarton, Emeritus Professor of Architecture at the University of Liverpool and author of Cooks’ Camden: Making of Modern Housing.

The street-based housing built in the London Borough of Camden in the 1960s and 1970s, when Sydney Cook was borough architect, is widely regarded as some of the most innovative and important of the 20th century. This was confirmed by the award of the RIBA Royal Gold Medal to Neave Brown, the architect of Alexandra Road, shortly before his death in 2018.

In this talk Swenarton will discuss how Sydney Cook, Neave Brown and others at Camden, including Peter Tábori and Benson Forsyth, created this low-rise, high-density typology, what it comprised, and what we can learn from it today.

As an attendee of the event you will be able to purchase Cook’s Camden: Making of Modern Housing, Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd. (September 2017) at a discounted price of £35 – save £10. Once you’ve bought your ticket you will receive a confirmation email with the discount code. This can be used at the checkout on ribabookshops.com or in the Bookshop at 66 Portland Place.
