Description

The second instalment of the RIBA Book Club introduces Edinburgh-based, award-winning architect Richard Murphy, discussing his book Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited.

Scarpa is the architect’s architect. Forty years after his death, his work remains a never-ending source of fascination for designers. There are more books on Scarpa than any other modern architect. What is it, though, that keeps drawing architects back to Scarpa? According to Murphy, there are two types of architect, those who learn from architects and those who copy him.

In his talk, Murphy will highlight what he has learnt from Scarpa through his monograph on the Castelvecchio. In terms of Scarpa’s creative treatment of historical buildings; innovative pared back treatment of exhibition design; craft-based approach; and his elevation of the everyday detail. Murphy will also describe how a close scrutiny of Scarpa’s drawings has led to key insights into Scarpa’s thought and design processes.

As an attendee of the event, you will be able to purchase Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited at a discounted price of £60 – save £10.
