The Venue

The Heron Inn is a beautiful riverside pub on the outskirts of Truro, overlooking the Truro and Tresillian river where they join the river Fal. It boasts stunning views across the estuary and is accessible by both car and boat.

Malpas is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with breath taking views of the rivers and surrounding hills. Covered in trees and foliage, the colours are exciting all year round, and even more so in autumn when the valley comes alive in a sea of reds, browns and yellows. There are fantastic walks from the village to the surrounding countryside, including the riverside walk to the picturesque village of St. Clement, and then onward to Tresillian.

The area is also a Site Of Special Scientific Interest, with it’s abundance of wildfowl and wading birds. These include Egrets, Curlews, Ospreys and of course the native Grey Heron. There have also been sightings of a pelican outside of The Heron Inn.

The village is in the civil parish of St Clement and is a popular centre for boating with navigable waterways to Truro, Falmouth and the sea. Historically, Malpas is known for its ferry service to the Roseland peninsula and there is a myth that this crossing was used by Iseult*. Ferries and boat trips still operate from Malpas.

Malpas began as ‘Mopus Passage’ in early 1800 with buildings situated on the southern side of the Tresillian River. By 1842, 10 dwellings, including two pubs, were located on the northern side of the river in what is now called Malpas. By 1880, there were 38 buildings in the village and 1907 saw 51 dwellings. Much development took place before WW2 and in the 1960s, the village doubled in size when the houses on Bar Meadows were built. Malpas remains a tiny but lively community.

*The Irish princess, Iseult of Ireland is the daughter of King Anguish of Ireland and Queen Iseult the Elder. She is a main character in the Tristan poems of Béroul, Thomas of Britain, and Gottfried von Strassburg and in the opera Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner.
