Event description

Description

Are you interested in enhancing your ecological and sustainable building design knowledge? Do you need some training to give you the confidence in your skills?

The RIBA is delighted to offer this fascinating and informative seminar, helping you design for the future.

Modern construction has changed dramatically over the last decade – energy efficient/low carbon design consideration have become the norm; health and wellbeing, in particular relating to air quality, has moved up on the agenda and the effects from predicted climate change mean that the buildings and cities we design today will have to perform under very different environments than they evolved in.

Already the effects from man-made climate change start to impact on even only recently completed buildings and infrastructure when it comes to comfort, overheating, droughts and flooding.

Research by University College London suggests that often the air quality within our homes is worse than the outside air - more stringent energy requirements restrict ventilation in new homes; excessive use of plastics in construction impact on air quality, some of which have been proven carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic.

Successful sustainable design is multifaceted. It is as much about the impact on the environment as it is about the impact on ourselves.

Minimising carbon emissions, energy and resource requirements does not mean compromising on quality, design, comfort or air quality. Integrated solutions are needed to meet these complex challenges and they need to be implemented from the earliest stages to maximise free energy savings that can also help unlock further energy and costs optimisation opportunities.

This seminar will demonstrate how an architect-led, fully integrated approach will help architects to create heathier, more productive and more profitable environments for their clients. The content will be useful for both, colleagues who aspire to build to world leading standards for energy efficiency like Passivhaus or who in general intend to raise the energy performance of their designs.

Through the use of case studies and monitoring data the speaker will share his experience from having been involved as the lead architect with more than 200 UK climate ready Passivhaus dwellings, offices, schools, pool and leisure buildings, including what worked and more importantly what didn’t. In addition to the general principles the speaker will illustrate how Passivhaus can be achieved at standard average construction costs.

SPEAKER

Tomas Gaertner ARB RIBA

Tomas is a qualified architect and a director of SE3D, an RiBA chartered, design led practice specialising in human centred design. In 2010 he became one of the first certified Passivhaus designers in the UK when he helped develop the UK’s first multi-residential certified Passivhaus. He has since been involved as an architect and Passivhaus designer with the delivery of more than 200 Passivhaus dwellings, offices and schools and led on the Passivhaus design for the UK’s first Passivhaus public pool and leisure centre for Exeter City Council. Tomas is also a certified Building Biologist, and oversees their UK seminar programme on healthy building . He is a regular speaker at Green Register events, the UK Passivhaus conference and Ecobuild
