This seminar will explore the role of Principal Designer. It is not a “Health and Safety” role but a “Design Risk Management” role which along with all other factors such as aesthetics, fitness for purpose, structures, services, sustainability, etc. considers the integration of buildability, maintainability and usability on all construction projects.

Rather than being a box ticking health and safety auditing process this can be a concept enhancing and team empowering activity which validates the design intent and provides an ethically important and tolerable constructability rationale. This enables architects to integrate this design based process into everyday design activities ,and to simply execute their CDM Designer and Principal Designer duties and earn additional fees in the process.

Programme:-

6:30pm - 6:45pm - Paul Bussey to give a brief introduction to the Charette including the latest RIBA and HSE thinking on the role of the Principal Designer. This is intended to be carried out by the “Designer in control of the [design] stage” of projects ie. Architects on architectural projects.

A verbal explanation of the workshopping activities will then follows-

6:45pm – 7:00pm - 4 No - 15 Minute workshops (groups of 5-6 people):-

-CDM Strategy Brief- preparation of a CDM briefing document to capture the key project criteria, team and client arrangements
-A “Hazard Awareness Risk Identification” (HARI) workshop” at the 2nd screen creating a simple risk tracking register
-A Principles of Prevention workshop where DRM Analysis case studies are discussed and sketched on Flip chart paper
-A CDM analysis workshop where AHMM or delegates existing documents are reviewed and discussed , and presented.
-Plenary Sessions

7:10pm - 7:20pm Workshop B - feedback

7:20pm - 7:30pm- Workshop C- feedback

7:30pm - 7:40pm Workshop D- feedback

7:40pm - 8:00pm Final Discussion and Q&A

8:00pm - 8:30pm Drinks /Networking
