Event description

Description

Since the Health and Safety Executive’s CDM 2015 Regulations came into effect in 2015, the RIBA has been offering a range of half, one and two day courses on the Principal Designer role. These are the only Principal Designer Courses offered by the RIBA.

RIBA's accredited Principal Designer course define and provide adequate “skills, knowledge, experience” to a professionally agreed standard. To show awareness and capability to deliver this role there is an industry expectation for professionals to demonstrate attendance and knowledge attained. Following completion, an attendance certificate will be issued showing that you attended the RIBA-accredited courses. This certificate could be useful should a client, stakeholder or external body require evidence that you have the industry standard skills, knowledge and understanding of the principal designer role.

Course content and structure
The 3-hour course is delivered over an afternoon, including a workshop session exploring case studies provided by course leaders, as well as some delegate’s own ongoing projects. The two sessions cover the following topics:

Session one

  • Q&A: write your questions for later discussions

  • Introductory open discussion about CDM 2015 and its integration

  • What new roles and responsibilities, if any, have you undertaken since April 2015?

  • CDM Differently: why architectural PD’s need a different approach

  • How has CDM 2015 been applied on projects to date?

  • Misunderstandings, misconceptions and myth-busting

  • Strategic CDM issues: capturing key information about your project and fee bids

  • RIBA Plan of Work and the stage by stage delivery of CDM 2015

  • CDM Design Reviews: what can go wrong and how to avoid it

Session two

  • H&S/CDM case studies for architects; some of what you need to know, and where to get more

  • Exemplar projects explained by speaker

  • Workshop session: some of your own projects reviewed by course leader and the group

  • Summary of lessons learnt

  • Q&A: your questions discussed, and open discussions

Delegates are encouraged to bring project drawing bundles, and some projects are then randomly selected by course leader for group discussions. Significant risks captured on flipchart for delegates to develop further after the course.

This course is designed and developed by Paul Bussey and Tony Putsman, and will be delivered by Paul Bussey.
