RIBA Practice Clinic: Brexit - Implications for the Profession

About this Event

Calling all practice owners, sole practitioners and architects working in small practices! We’ve developed a series of interactive online events to provide a forum to discuss issues and problems that practices are facing as they navigate their way through the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and Brexit.

For this session we will be focusing on Brexit and discussing the implications for the profession. You are welcome to submit questions and concerns about Brexit, European projects and staffing issues which we will try to address in this session.

Professor Maria Vogiatzaki, Head of School, ARU Chelmsford

Dr Maria Vogiatzaki is an educator, architect and researcher, Professor of Architecture at Anglia Ruskin University, UK. She is a Principal Fellow of Higher Education Academy, and the editor and chapters’ author of her recent book entitled "Architectural Materialisms: Nonhuman Creativity” published by Edinburgh University Press. Maria is the editor-in-chief of Scopus Indexed referred journal archidoct (http://www.enhsa.net/archidoct/). Her PhD at the University of Bath, School of Architecture supervised by Chris Williams and Edmund Happold investigated the design process of non-standard architecture. Her research work and education lie in the materiality of architecture. She was the Coordinator of the European Network of Design and Technologies Teachers (2001-15) www.enhsa.net. Maria is a free-lance architect, lectures and sits at design, Masters and PhD juries and committees around the world. Maria has been the founder and Director of the Masters Programme "Advanced Design: Innovation and Transdisciplinarity in Architectural Design" at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Maria is the founder and editor-in-chief of Scopus Indexed refereed journal archidoct (www.archidoct.net). Maria’s Masters students have won nine international awards and prizes on their design diploma theses (2015-2019). Maria is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Architectural Registration Board (ARB) in the UK, a chartered architect in the UK and Greece (Technical Chamber of Greece) and member of the Association of University Teachers and a member of the Design Society.

Keith Williams , Founder and Director of Design, Keith Williams Architects

Keith Williams is a chartered architect and urban designer, and the founder and director of design at Keith Williams Architects. He established Keith Williams Architects in 2001 since when he has been the recipient of some 40 national and international architecture and design awards and has become one of this country’s leading architects. He works nationally and internationally across a broad range of project scales and types and is a leading specialist architect for civic and cultural buildings. In 2016 he was one of the first to become a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects when fellowship was reintroduced by the RIBA at the end of that year. In 2015 he became Chair of the Civic Trust Awards National Panel of Judges, he is Co-Chair of Design South East, Chair of the Lewisham Design Review Panel, and was a member of the National Design Review Panel at Design Council CABE (2008-2020) . Keith has taught widely and lectured on his work, thoughts and ideas across the UK as well as in Canada, China, Ireland, and Malaysia. In 2010 he was made Distinguished Honorary Visiting Professor of Architecture at Zhengzhou University, China, and was external examiner to the School of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde from 2010–2013. Keith Williams Architects has worked on projects in the EU for some 20 years notably in Ireland but also Germany, the Scandic countries and elsewhere. Keith campaigned against Brexit, writing articles for the press and took part in the main anti-Brexit marches during 2019. As the UK has now left the EU, he and his firm are adjusting to life outside.
