About this event

Our October Conservation Group online talk turns its focus to flint, a material that has shaped the built environment for centuries. From its early use in Roman construction to its increasing presence in contemporary high-status projects, flint continues to play a vital role in both heritage and modern architecture.

Introduction to Flintwork

Flint has been used in construction since Roman times, shaping both humble boundary walls and the finest examples of craftsmanship. Today, this versatile material is experiencing a revival, appearing in many contemporary high-status projects while continuing its historic role in the built environment.

This session will explore the many faces of flint: from the different types of stone and the range of finishes, through to the techniques that elevate a simple stock wall into exceptional work. We will also look at modern construction methods, the role of mortars, and the importance of engaging skilled contractors to achieve high-quality results.

For those living or working in areas where flint is part of the landscape or for anyone with a curiosity about this unique material, this talk will offer both technical insight and an appreciation of its enduring relevance.

About the Speaker

Duncan Berry has been working with flint for over thirty years, contributing to a wide variety of projects ranging from nationally significant sites to modest garden walls. Alongside his practice, he is committed to teaching the next generation of flint layers and is particularly proud of his mentorship of Callum Jackson, who has been with him for nine years and is developing into a skilled craftsman.
