Event description

Description

RIBA Surrey invites you to a networking lunch, followed by a workshop discussion.

Through the perspectives of both a serving Conservation Officer and a Conservation Architect, this session will offer delegates a range of practical insights into Heritage Statements, why they are important, and how they can be structured to effectively support your schemes.

Real world examples and the inside opinion of conservation experts will help you to understand more about these documents, and in-particular will deal with the following issues:

  • What really is a Heritage Statement?
  • When is it required and what should it include?
  • What is Significance, and what is Harm? Why do they matter?
  • What is proportional to your project?

This session will help you:

  • To understand the policy background of heritage statements and their use in the planning system.
  • To learn how to apply a significance-based approach to your design.
  • To learn what to include, and how to justify your proposals with a reasoned judgement.
  • To explain, from a Conservation Officer’s perspective what is required, and what is unnecessary.
  • To provide sources of further advice and guidance.

Speaker: Rachel White MSc, Winchester City Council, & IHBC

Rachel is currently the Historic Environment Team Leader at Winchester City Council. She has over 20 years of experience as a Conservation Officer in Local Government and has worked in a wide range of environments with hugely varying development pressures, from the rural Cathedral City of Hereford to the more urban centre and faster pace of change at Basingstoke Borough. Rachel has a broad spectrum of experience in relation to assessing development proposals which would affect the historic environment and has the advantage of having been both a case officer and a consultee in the planning process.

Speaker: Ross Aylward, T2 Architects & RIBA Conservation Register, CA

Ross is currently a Director at T2 Architects, based in Winchester. Throughout his career he has been involved in many heritage projects from Grade II cottages and barns up to the management of Grade I listed properties and Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Ross joined the RIBA Conservation Register as a Conservation Architect in 2015 and continues to work extensively on heritage projects as the lead heritage practitioner in his firm. In 2017 Ross was invited to join the RIBA Regional Awards judging panel as the Conservation Specialist and seeks to promote conservation matters within the region.
