RIBA South/South East Conservation: Stone in building & British Standards, codes of practice for natural stone

The seminar will be split into two parts, the first part considering 'Stone in building' and the second part featuring British Standards and codes of practice for natural stone in buildings.

1)Stone in building

This presentation considers the use of natural stone as cladding and masonry.

Cladding can be traditional handset, stone on precast concrete, rainscreen or curtain wall.

Design will follow:

Traditional Hand set cladding BS 8298 – 2

Stone faced pre-cast concrete cladding systems BS 8298-3

Rainscreen and stone on metal frames – BS 8298-4.

Design of fixings – BS 8298 Parts 2 -4 & Eurocodes.

Eurocode 6 taking account of the National Annex.

BS 5642-1:1978+A1:2014 & BS 5642-2:1983+A1:2014 - Sills, copings and cappings.

The presentation will look at the correct design and detailing of stone as cladding and masonry and show some classic failures caused by workmanship and design.

2)British Standards and codes of practice for natural stone in buildings

This presentation will set out the British standards, codes of practice and technical notes that are relevant to all uses of natural stone including stone selection, design and installation. We will consider the 7 natural stone product types covered by harmonised product standards and which require provision of a Declaration of Performance and CE marking.

This CPD will also include the requirements set out in the Building Regulations, for design, workmanship and materials.

The standards and codes cover the following applications are: -

Paving, Kerbs and setts.

Internal and external flooring

Wall and floor tilling

Cladding and lining

Peter Harrison – Independent Stone Consultant

Peter has been involved with the Stone Federation Great Britain for many years and currently is a member of their Technical Committee. Peter has also been part of the BSI committee and his work on British Standards and Industry Codes of Practice for natural stone continues to this day. Peter is currently part of the BSI committee revising BS8298 Parts 1 – 5, BS5385-5 & BS8000-3, his Stone Federation work currently involves the draft codes for internal stone lining and traditional masonry construction. He has also sat on the European committee for natural stone for over 20 years, during this time he was fortunate enough to work on some very prestigious projects both in the UK and internationally. Earlier this year Peter was awarded the Duke of Gloucester Gold Medal for outstanding lifetime achievement in the natural stone industry.
