About RIBA Yorkshire Small & Emerging Practice
Founded four years ago, the RIBA Yorkshire Small & Emerging Practice group has grown into a dynamic forum covering a wide range of architectural topics. Past meetings have explored architectural fees, planning and the housing crisis, climate challenges, opportunities in timber design, and even more unconventional themes such as architectural photography.
The group was established with a core vision: to encourage collaboration by providing a safe and supportive space where members can share knowledge, best practices, and experiences. In essence, this community functions like a large practice, with our monthly meetings serving as a ‘water cooler’ moment—a place to exchange ideas, gain insights, and foster professional connections.
A Platform for Inspiration and Growth
A small practice in Yorkshire does not equate to small ambitions or lesser-quality projects. Our meetings have showcased exceptional architectural work, inspiring those who may be considering launching their own practice and offering motivation to those already navigating the challenges of independent practice.
Beyond peer-to-peer support, the group also serves an essential role in advocating for small practices within the RIBA. Through the Regional RIBA Council, we ensure that the voices, challenges, and experiences of smaller firms are heard and represented at a national level.
Shaping the Future of the Group
This group is ultimately what we, as members, make of it. Architecture is a profession of privilege—our work shapes environments and influences lives. By coming together through initiatives like this, we can enhance the greater good and be greater than the sum of our parts.
Our most recent in-person event was met with enthusiasm, with strong requests for more face-to-face gatherings. We welcome new topics, fresh ideas, and feedback on how to shape our future meetings. If you have thoughts on potential discussion themes or would like to get involved, please get in touch at riba.yorkshire@riba.org.
We look forward to continuing this journey together.
