About this event

  • Event lasts 390 days 1 hour

In 2017 The Memorial Mob inspired by a field of poppies in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire and the Tower of London poppies created a "living memorial" made from real poppies to grow intime to mark the centenary of the ending of WW1 in 2018.

The initial plan was to create a carpet of crimson between Lands End and John O'Groats, as we learnt that the UK has lost 97% of our wildflowers since WW2 alone. However, thanks to the positive power of social media and many youth groups from Scouts and Guides, to Cadets and Schools, who took the project to their hearts, the Ribbon of Poppies went global!

2025 sees the 80th anniversaries of both Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day. To remember the fallen of WW2 and the return of peace instead of global conflict. We once again ask you to "sow the seeds" to "honour the deeds".

We welcome The Veterans Charity to our side to help grow remembrance with young and old, individuals to organisations, civilian to military, the public to our leaders.

As before there is no charge to join the Ribbon of Poppies as the price has been paid for us all, by those who never came home.

So join us please on March the 10th 2025, for Ribbon of Poppies Day, part of Veterans Month to sow the first waves of wildflowers of remembrance.

Follow us on the official social media pages @RibbonOfPoppies on Facebook and Twitter.

Is the event free to join?

Yes. The Memorial Mob and The Veterans Charity do not charge to pledge to "grow" remembrance. You just need to source a supply of poppy seeds and somewhere to sow them!

You can sow any wildflowers, such as poppies, cornflowers, daisies, forget me nots and more. You are welcome to sow red poppies for the armed forces, purple for the animals of war, yellow for the munitions workers, white for peace, black for the commonwealth forces.

Why is it important to sow wildflowers?

The UK alone has lost 97% of our wildflowers since the end of WW2, this Ribbon of Poppies will honour the fallen, with a living memorial to the fallen and improve the chances for wildlife.

What options are available?

You can fill a plant pot with poppies, or a poppy patch in a garden, to working with local councils & landowners to sow wildflowers in the margins along transport routes or parks, to a memorial meadow!

We are not based in the UK, can we join in?

Yes. In 2017 the Ribbon of Poppies went global, thanks to organisations like the Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Brownies, Girl Guides and Cadets. The booking system doesn't allow us to select the World as an option, but all are welcome. We ask that people take care not to introduce non native plants.

I run a school, youth group, uniformed youth organisation, will there be any lesson plans or ideas?

Yes. We share items on line, often linked to our other work for you to utilise, including the Routes of Remembrance, that honours the work of the transport that played their part in conflicts, including WW2.
