Event description
Seek out the cave in Bostall Woods that Dick Turpin is reputed to have used when seeking refuge from the King's troops seeking retribution.

About this Event

Due to the lockdown, we can't all meet at 9.30am at the Southwark Needle to do this ride. However, we can all still do the route of the ride if we set off from the Southwark Needle in pairs at prearranged intervals.

As Eventbrite bookings are "blind", in addition to signing up for Eventbrite tickets, we also need to use the Doodle poll at https://doodle.com/poll/vhuwu2nauicrbz7u to indicate who we want to ride with, in the same way that we might choose who we want to talk to on a conventional social cycle ride.

There used to be a pub in East Wickham called the Fanny on the Hill. Unfortunately, like so many things to do with Greenwich Cyclists, it's not there any more. But that doesn't stop us doing a ride there.

The name of the pub alluded to the legend that, when Dick Turpin was using Bostall Woods as a refuge from the King's troops seeking retribution, he waited in the woods for a signal from the local barmaid Fanny, who shone a lamp from the window of this bar when danger from the troops had passed.

This is a ride where we will seek out the cave where Dick Turpin is reputed to have hidden. But in reality, the cave is probably just a disused tunnel running from the side of a chalk pit. Children used to play inside the cave, but this is no longer the case, as Greenwich Council sealed it off for healthy and safety reasons.

We meet for this 26 mile ride at the Southwark Needle and start by cycling along the new segregated Cycleway 4 to Cutty Sark Gardens, where you can also join this ride at 10am. We then cycle up through Greenwich Park to Blackheath, Kidbrooke, Oxleas Wood, East Wickham Open Space and then Bostall Woods, where the caves are located.

We then continue to Lesnes Abbey, where we stop off for a refreshment break. We return to Cutty Sark Gardens via the Ridgeway, Woolwich and the Thames Path.

This ride has been done in the past as a Letsride ride, but now it's being done as an Eventbrite one.

This is the route for the ride.

Please do not attend if you are self-isolating or have Coronavirus symptoms.
