Event description
Come and learn about Essex's only long-term heavy bomber base in one of its original wartime buildings.

About this event

Open on the second Sunday of each month (April to September), the Ridgewell Airfield Commemorative Museum remembers those who flew from Essex's only long-term heavy bomber base.

Housed in an original Nissen hut that formed part of the airfield's former hospital, it tells the most remarkable story.

Home to 90 Squadron (RAF) and the American Eighth Air Force's 381st Bomb Group, RAF Ridgewell saw the arrival and departure of Britain's first four-engine bomber - the Short Stirling - and one of the Second World War's most famous aircraft - the Flying Fortress.

For 30 months, almost 350 combat operations were carried out and some 1,500 airmen were lost. They're now remembered here.

Learn about those who called Ridgewell home, and the stories of some who never returned. You won't forget them.
