Overview

This year’s Rights of the Child UK (ROCK) Annual Conference will provide an opportunity to explore how domestic law can progress the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in the UK. Speakers and delegates from across the UK will discuss recent developments and assess opportunities to further domestic incorporation of the UNCRC and allow for learning between the four nations.

The conference will take place in Cardiff on Wednesday 12th December 2018. Registration will be from 9:30. The conference will begin at 10:00 and end at 15:30.

Conference aims

The purpose of ROCK’s annual conference is to bring together representatives from across the four nations in order to explore how domestic law can progress the implementation of the UNCRC. Through speaker presentations and discussion throughout the day, the conference will look at:

  • Developments that are currently taking place across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to embed the UNCRC into law and policy;
  • Threats to existing legal protections of children’s rights
  • Opportunities to further legal protections of children’s rights under the UNCRC within England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and at UK level.

The conference aims to:

  • Highlight the importance of strengthening children’s rights protections in domestic legislation, at both devolved and UK-wide levels
  • Update ROCK members of developments across the UK and allow for learning between the nations
  • Re-engage supporters in efforts to strengthen domestic legal frameworks to protect and progress UNCRC implementation
  • Build networks and partnerships between ROCK members to support proactive advocacy in support of children’s rights in law.

Agenda

The morning session of the conference will feature both governmental and non-governmental speakers from across the four nations who will provide updates on UNCRC implementation in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
