Description

Rights to Access Healthcare Project:

Healthwatch Warwickshire has created a project called Rights to Access Healthcare to help people who are experiencing any form of homelessness to access healthcare when they need it. The workshop is about

  • Brief introduction to Healthwatch Warwickshire
  • Rights to access healthcare
  • NHS Constitution
  • GP duty of care
  • NHS guidelines for GP registration

The information shared is to help your service users in accessing care. By attending the workshop you will be given Rights Cards and booklets about the information discussed and around general practice.

By homeless we mean anyone who has

  • Nowhere to stay and are living on the streets
  • Staying with friends or family
  • Staying in a hostel, night shelter or B&B
  • Squatting (in a place you have no legal right to stay)
  • At risk of violence or abuse in your home
  • Living in poor conditions that affect your health
  • Living apart from your family because you do not have a place to live together

The project will be delivered over 18 Months across the county and is being delivered across the districts in the following order:

Warwick, Leamington, Kenilworth: Feb 2019- Apr 2019

Stratford: May 2019 - July 2019

Quotes from attendees:

“Every bit of info was most effective and will be a great help in the environment we work in.”

“Very informative workshop and well delivered”

Benefit of attending the workshop:

The project is to help the people of Rugby district in accessing care and treatment. You can help people experiencing a form of homelessness by giving them the information and the tools needed to go to a GP practice. The information shared applies to everyone not just homeless people so is worthwhile in general.

Case Study:

A Healthwatch volunteer attended one of the workshops, taking some cards and booklets away with her. She then took these to her local Church, where she discussed the project.

One of the attendees of the discussion later met a homeless person who was struggling to walk, and she told him about the project. Subsequently this man went to the Church to learn more and receive one of our cards. He then went to his GP and was able to access an appointment the same day.

The GP referred him to Warwick hospital for x-rays and physiotherapy. He was supported by the Church to attend these appointments and was given crutches by a member of the congregation.

He said that having our card had given him the confidence to go and see the GP. He now has a NHS number and, with help from the Church, has applied for a HC1 and is awaiting his HC2.
