Event description
Turning 'Make Do and Mend' into a punk statement of defiance in the face of capitalism! Hand sewing, empowering music and networking.

About this Event

This event is hosted by Ruth and Ruth, The radical Ruths, R&R.

The government has declared a climate emergency (finally) and if you haven't already, now is the time to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle.

Taking inspiration from the DIY culture of Riot Grrrl and the activism of underground music movements participants will be provided with a selection of scrap material, needles and thread, or you are invited to bring your own; old t-shirts, tea towels, tights! These will be repurposed into a reusable bag to carry unpackaged fruits, vegetables and groceries. R&R will show you some simple hand sewing techniques, a vital skill, as society is now faced with the repercussions of years of over consumption and the stark reality of the need to change.

Turning 'Make Do and Mend' into a punk statement of defiance in the face of capitalism, the sewing activity will take place against a back drop of Riot Grrrl music allowing a discussion and networking opportunity to share the knowledge and skills of all involved.

All womxn, femme, non-binary and gender non conforming people are welcomed. The event sets to create a safe space centring around the empowerment of these groups and creating support networks in enacting positive climate action. This event is free, but donations are gratefully received towards the cost of refreshments and the labour donated by the artists.

R&R will have a prepared play list and some much loved records (a lot of 90's, yeah thats our era!), but we also welcome track suggestion or bring along your own much loved vinyl. These will be played through the duration of the event as a conversation icebreaker and prompt for positive femme community building.

*R&R consider Riot Grrrl as an intent not a genre, therefore suggestions can include music written and performed by womxn, femme, NB and GNC people, which may have inspired and empowered you in your identity and motivation to enact change.

This event is part of the Antiuniversity Now festival 15-22 June 2019
