About this event

An immersive creative experience blending live poetry, performance, and participatory workshop. Dr Louie Gardiner shares a bold, evocative collection inviting us to face how we unwittingly exploit the planet to serve our desires for aesthetics and convenience. We are confronted with our human impact.

Offering five thought-provoking poems, Louie draws us into an encounter designed to ignite sparks of interest, reflections and experimentation.

Using creative writing, small group discussions and opportunities in the big group, we will generate a space that honours vulnerability, imagination, and shared reflection.

Perfect for anyone drawn to emergence, dialogue and self-expression.

No experience is necessary – simply a willingness to engage creatively with critical environmental issues and devastating human impact.

Includes a free online booklet. Poetry books available to purchase at the event.

This workshop is part of the Zero to 50 exhibition: Navigating Life at Whitespace EH8 9HQ

Everyone is welcome to the Opening Evening on Fri 21 Nov 2025 from 6pm

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to know a lot about poetry?

No. Poems will act as a catalyst for the group and we'll see what comes up. We'll follow the threads in the group. We might do some creative writing but there's no experience needed, people can write in any language and no-one will need to share their writing if they dont want to.

Do I need to know a lot about environmental issues?

No. You just need to care.

Is it seated?

Yes. But we don't know the layout yet for the seating. It will be a small group, probably around 20 people.

Do I have to bring anything or prepare?

No preparation needed - you may wish to bring a notebook and pen if you have a special one you like for your writing, however plain paper will be available.

Will I have to participate if I don't want to?

Absolutely not. You can listen to the poems and reflect inwardly. There are likely to be opportnities to join others for a conversation - but you dont have to! Sitting quietly with your own thoughts is also fine.
