This month's Rise and Design is at the Xcel centre in Newton Aycliffe.
The automotive sector is one of the leading industries in the North East and one of the reasons we lead the way in UK exports.
But it’s not all about Nissan – there are lots of smaller companies doing amazing things to push the sector forward, and this is where you can hear from just a few of them. Speakers are to include:
Tom Larsen, R&D Manager, Gestamp Chassis
Gestamp design, develop and manufacture leading edge, chassis structural and suspension products for the global automotive industry, for customers including Bentley, BMW, Ford, Jaguar and Nissan. Tom will give us an insight into how they maintain their world class products and reputation.
Stephen Irish, Managing Director, Hyperdrive Innovation
Hyperdrive Innovation, based in the Future Technology Centre in Sunderland, design and build battery systems for automotive, off-road, industrial, marine and standby power applications. Stephen will describe some of their recent successes as well as the challenges they face as electric vehicles become more widespread and their customers more demanding.
David Miller and Michael Hutchinson, Designers, Hedgehog Lab
Hedgehog Lab, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, are a leading global enterprise app developer & post-PC technology consultancy. They have recently worked with Mitsubishi Motors to collaborate on a a connected car design using Android Auto operating systems. David and Michael will take you through the process they went through on Mitsubishi's behalf to develop a final concept.
Special guests: St Oswald's Hospice and their brand new double-decker bus
After the main event there will be a unique opportunity to do your bit for charity.
St Oswald’s Hospice have recently become the proud owner of a double decker bus, kindly donated by Go North East, and they’d like your help to decide how best to use it. Whether it’s as a mobile fundraising centre, a pop up shop, a travelling theatre or simply a coach for hire, they’d love to hear your great ideas and how best to achieve them.
So rather than just standing round with a cup of coffee, you’ll be invited to jump aboard, have a look round and put your creative minds to work to help them come up with some innovative ideas and novel designs.
Following on from this event, on 22 March we will be holding a Strategic Roadmapping session, focused on the automotive sector. If you would like to attend or find out more, please follow this link: http://buff.ly/1TaoIuZ
When & Where
Design Network North
Design Network North supports innovative companies, helping them to utilise high quality design skills and processes.
We accomplish this by offering specialised product design, industrial design and new product development support.
Good design is the key to future competitiveness. At a time when product quality standards are universally high and costs have been driven relentlessly downward, design and improved functionality have become the most important factors in the marketplace.
Intended to enhance regional companies’ ability to employ high-quality design, skills and processes, Design Network North works closely with other regional, national and international design projects, and helps those without access to the relevant design skills, achieve their aspirations for growth. Design Network North also holds regular networking events, 'Rise & Design', and delivers onsite Design Performance Workshops to embed good design within your business.
The Northern Design Centre will form a regional focal point for use of design by North East England’s businesses and service providers. Throughout each year, the design centre will feature work not just from local product designers but examples from all areas of design.
Funded by Gateshead Council, the network is co-ordinated by RTC North Ltd in Sunderland.
