Event description

Description

For the last couple of years, an existential crisis has been brewing in the world of design.

In 2017, Natasha Jen, a partner at Pentagram in New York, claimed that “design thinking is bullshit”. More recently, Khoi Vinh, a designer at Adobe, countered -sort of- in a talk titled “In Defense of Design Thinking, Which Is Terrible”.

In their desire to have a seat at the table of big business, many designers have worked hard to bundle their approach to perceiving and changing the world in to a neat, saleable package.

Now design has earned a seat at the table, what should we do with it? Is this common question the wrong way around? The rise of design thinking has seen the commodification of design in the business world, but has business earned a seat at the design table? Do they have the organisational maturity to launch and sustain a culture of design and is business a table design should want a seat at? Maybe we all need to be at a bring-and-share picnic.

Andy Polaine, designer, author and Regional Design Director for APAC at Fjord, will help us unpack this thorny issue as part of our global series exploring The Future of Design Ethics.

We can’t wait to see you.

**Please note that the talk will start at 8 am sharp. We will provide free coffee at this event, please arrive no later than 7:50 am to make sure you have time to get the coffee.

A huge thank you to our event sponsors:
