As part of this years Parents' Week, Parenting NI have invited Robin Balbernie to be a guest speaker at their event for professionals working with families in the statutory, voluntary and community sectors.

Robin Balbernie will share his extensive knowledge, expertise and provide an insight into:

  • The long-term effects of maltreatment - introduce both gloom and urgency

  • Risks, relationships and Repair - how we can offer help in the very early years before too much goes wrong

  • Attachment perspective and secure attachment confers resilience

  • The importance of early relationships: attachment, development and an infant mental health intervention.

About Robin Balbernie

Robin was a Professional Lead for child psychotherapy and a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist in Gloucestershire CAMHS. For over a decade, beginning with the Sure Start programme, he worked with the Children’s Centres as clinical lead of the team providing an infant mental health service, known locally and nationally as ‘Secure Start’. He was also involved with the Intensive Baby Care Unit at Gloucester Royal Hospital and ran supervision groups for Health Visitors for over 25 years. His interest in working with adopted children led him to the field of Infant Mental Health and early preventative intervention. He is an advisor to the Association of Infant Mental Health and was a member of the Young Minds’ Policy and Strategy Advisory Group. He has published papers in many journals, including the Infant Mental Health Journal, the British Journal of Psychotherapy, Family Law, Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Attachment & Human Development, Young Minds, Nursery World, The International Journal of Birth & Parenting Education and the Journal of Child Psychotherapy.

About Parents' Week 2017

Parenting NI celebrate Parents' Week every October to highlight the important role parents play in their children's lives. This year the theme is "Every Child is a Star" focusing on four key elements:

  • S - strength : Providing parents with support to strengthen relationships

  • T - talk : Encouraging parents to be more confident when talking to their children about feelings and emotions

  • A - awareness : Raising awareness of the importance of resilience in children

  • R - resilience : Giving parents the tools to help build their children's resilience
