Risky Business – An Overview of Periodontal Risk Factors
Overview
* This Webinar is intended for the Denal Hygienists, Dental Therapists, Dentists*
Aims
- To enhance clinical understanding of the multifactorial etiology of periodontal disease.
- To equip dentists with the ability to identify both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors in patients.
- To integrate evidence-based risk assessment tools into periodontal evaluation protocols.
- To reinforce the importance of behavioral, systemic, and environmental influences on periodontal health.
- To support the development of personalized prevention and treatment plans based on individual risk profiles.
Objectives
- Define periodontal disease and review its pathogenesis with a focus on host-microbial interactions.
- Differentiate between key modifiable (e.g., smoking, oral hygiene) and non-modifiable (e.g., age, genetics) risk factors.
- Introduce and evaluate clinical tools such as the Periodontal Risk Assessment (PRA) model and staging/grading systems.
- Assess how systemic inflammation and immune response mechanisms link systemic diseases—such as diabetes and cardiovascular conditions—to periodontal disease progression.
- Demonstrate how to incorporate risk factor analysis into routine clinical workflows to enhance early intervention and patient compliance.
