The anthropocene is a term given to the epoch of time we find ourselves, where humans have become a measurable force in geological formation. This period in our history will be written in the stones of the future. The anthropocene began either at the advent of the Industrial Revolution, or as some argue when the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This has also been termed the advent of The Great Acceleration.

We as human beings know that things have radically changed around us; we are witnessing biodiversity collapses, hearing the last calls of dying bird species, witnessing forests disappear and experiencing 1.2 million km² of new urban built up area to the world in the three decades forecast.

This radical acceleration meets the eternal nature of being human. How do we bear witness to this, feeling our own cellular time meeting this? How do we create meaningful ritual that speaks to this experience? How do we allow ritual to help us from falling into grief, sorrow and mourning that has a seemingly unending depth?

This day workshop is an invitation to step into a safe space where we can begin to notice our feelings, to bear witness to one another and to invite creativity and meaning making as we design and practice rituals.

This is a space that welcomes all faiths and none, where the traditions you come from are welcome and honoured. The rituals of our ancestors are a significant part of knowing that we are not beginning from a cold start- this has been done for millennia, in other times of hardship and grief.

About Harriet Sams

Harriet Sams is an archaeologist, ecotherapist, freelance lecturer, yoga teacher and spiritual Guide for the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, mother and student.

From a very young age, Harriet has been in close connection to the landscape; especially to ancestral messages that are all around us, written onto the landscape. On rare occasions, the Voice of the world speaks to her and calls her into Service and Harriet interprets these messages as the voice of the ecological Whole; indivisible between human ancestor and landscape, all speaking with one voice. Through this awareness, she has realised that the land itself is where the healing resides. Harriet’s work is all about helping participants to directly access the healing the land/ancestors can bring the individual, working as facilitator for this awareness and guide for support.

Druidry and Quakerism guide her work; aspects of these spiritual traditions weave themselves into her teachings and offerings.

She is currently undertaking a PhD in archaeotherapy with Bournemouth University, is on the advisory Boards for the Climate Psychology Alliance and for Radical Joy for Hard Times, an eco-spirituality charity. Please see www.radicaljoy.org

She occasionally writes a blog at www.nwyfre.com about ecotherapeutic motherhood, amongst other things.
